The following is a sampling of projects completed by Kahl Environmental Services:
Consulting | Engineering | Construction
Consulting Projects
- Major Building Material Supplier,
San Diego and Riverside Counties, California
KES was retained to conduct Phase I environmental assessments at several retail facilities to support refinancing efforts. KES customized the due diligence studies to meet the specific requirements of the owner's financial lender resulting in property clearances within a limited escrow period.
- Major Hotel,
San Diego, California
KES conducted a comprehensive Phase I Assessment of a hotel property located in downtown San Diego. KES researched and documented historical uses of the property and identified all known spills/releases in the region. KES also interviewed site personnel and documented recognized environmental conditions both on-site and in the site vicinity. The due diligence study cleared the way for an ownership transfer and building renovation.
- Contractor/Developer,
San Diego, California
KES conducted post-lease and pre-lease site photo-documentation assessments for a general contractor preparing to relocate. The post-lease assessment was designed to record the condition of the site previously occupied by them and to document existing inventory. The pre-lease assessment was conducted to document pre-existing conditions at the new facility to be occupied. Photographic documentation included observable features such as cracked slabs, water damage, broken equipment, surface spillage, cracked asphalt, and bulk storage tanks.
- Farm Operation,
Borrego Springs, California
Kahl Environmental Services was retained by the owner of a 1,000-acre farm to investigate and evaluate environmental impacts to the site from historical farm operations. KES conducted Phase I studies, lead surveys, asbestos surveys, and several underground storage tank (UST) leak investigations. The phase II studies evaluated oil and diesel USTs, unregulated waste dumping, sumps, oil-water separator, hazardous materials storage. KES additionally managed and conducted all subsequent remediation efforts at the site.
- MTDB,
San Diego, California
KES provided soil & groundwater sampling and health & safety coordination/enforcement during construction efforts for the Metropolitan Transit Development Board Trolley Maintenance Facility located in downtown San Diego. Since the site contained contamination from petroleum hydrocarbons and other chemicals, most site activities required third-party worker training, extensive atmospheric monitoring and air sampling to evaluate worker exposure and to determine personal protective equipment requirements.
- Church Organization,
La Mesa, California
A former commercial ice-skating facility in San Diego hired KES to conduct a Phase I assessment of the facility for conversion for use by a church. KES' studies included an extensive asbestos survey, a health-based risk assessment, and cost analysis in preparation for future abatement activities.
- General Services Administration,
San Diego, California
KES provided Phase II soil sampling and testing for the closure of several USTs. The USTs stored diesel fuel for emergency generators at the Federal Building located in Downtown San Diego.
- Building Supply Retailer,
San Diego, California
A major building supply retailer utilized KES to investigate the location of suspect USTs on a property they occupied since the 1940's. KES performed historical research and conducted a utility/tank survey using geophysical surveying equipment. UST anomalies were identified and were further investigated by auger exploration.

Engineering Projects
- National Lumber Retailer,
San Diego County, California
KES performed comprehensive Phase II environmental assessments that included soil and groundwater investigations, geophysical surveys, and subsequent remediation of soil and groundwater contamination at several San Diego County properties owned by a national lumber company. The lumber retailer was closing facilities at several of their locations and required regulatory closures for multiple environmental release issues. KES achieved regulatory closure at all four properties with releases.
- High School District,
El Cajon and La Mesa, California
KES conducted four Phase II environmental assessments under contract to a High School District. Assessment services were performed at multiple high school properties for delineation of various leaking UST systems. All projects were completed on schedule and within project budgets.
- Aerospace Manufacturer,
El Cajon, California
KES performed a comprehensive remedial investigation and soil remediation at a property impacted by a leaking waste-oil UST. KES supervised the delineation and removal of over 1,100 cubic yards of TRPH and solvent impacted soils at the site and installed groundwater monitoring wells for assessment of groundwater impacts.
- Private University,
San Diego, California
KES conducted a health risk assessment and fate & transport study for a major private university acquiring a property potentially impacted by a neighboring gasoline release. The study included exposure evaluations for several buildings and elevator systems.
- U.S. Navy,
San Clemente Island, California
Under contract to the U.S. Navy, KES conducted a comprehensive remedial investigation and soil remediation project for waste-oil, diesel fuel, and solvent contamination. The project required unique logistical solutions to accommodate drilling and excavation tasks at a site with little to no industry resources.
- Real Estate Developer,
El Cajon, California
A developer had to replace an environmental consulting firm who installed a faulty remediation system on a retail property. KES was retained to conduct a system engineering evaluation and to implement system design changes to a dual-phase recovery system. KES conducted pilot tests and designed/constructed modifications to water recovery systems, process controls, and soil vapor treatment systems.

Construction Projects
- Commercial Fuel Retailer,
El Cajon, California
KES provided design, construction supervision, and ongoing operation and maintenance of a soil and groundwater treatment system. This system includes free product recovery, vapor extraction, and groundwater treatment through liquid phase carbon. The system required permitting through various regulatory agencies and monitoring reports on a regular basis.
- Redevelopment Agency,
San Juan Capistrano, California
KES was retained by a public redevelopment agency to remove three underground storage tanks. The project was successfully completed on-budget using in-house personnel. KES also conducted a geophysical survey for undocumented buried tanks and discovered a previously unknown UST.
- Commerical Automobile Dealer,
San Diego, California
KES was retained to perform subsurface investigations and remediation of soil and groundwater impacted by gasoline. Site contamination was mitigated through soil excavation and disposal. KES also provided regulatory compliance assistance and ultimately obtained regulatory closure.
- Grape Processing Facility,
Borrego Springs, California
KES provided for the excavation and on-site treatment of 3,000 cubic yards of diesel-impacted soil at a former grape processing facility. The soil was treated using an enhanced bioremediation technology that resulted in successful cleanup of the soil within 8 weeks of operation.
- Steel Fabricator,
National City, California
A major steel fabricator retained KES as General Contractor to demolish a 2,400 s.f. steel building and excavate 3,500 cubic yards of soil that had been impacted by a gasoline release. The project was conducted using in-house KES equipment operators, engineers, and technicians and included extensive dewatering and groundwater treatment.
- Automotive Dealership,
Poway, California
KES was retained to perform subsurface investigations and remediation of soil and groundwater impacted by a gasoline release. Site contamination was mitigated by soil excavation that required complex shoring efforts and dewatering. KES also installed a below-ground, three-chambered oil/water separator for treating site wastewater.
- Commercial Fuel Retailer,
La Mesa, California
A fuel retailer retained KES to design and construct a free product recovery system to initiate recovery of gasoline that had leaked from a UST. After completing a pilot study, KES installed a specialized recovery system consisting of pneumatic skimming pumps, a comprehensive soil vapor extraction system, and groundwater recovery and treatment system.
- Deli/Service Station,
Hemet, California
KES constructed a soil vapor extraction system to treat 1,500 cubic yards of subsurface soils impacted by gasoline. The 250 scfm system utilized thermal oxidation and successfully remediated the site within 18 months.
- Lumber Company,
La Mesa, California
KES constructed a dual-phase soil vapor extraction and groundwater recovery system to mitigate a large release of gasoline in the subsurface. The spill included thousands of gallons of free product extending under structures and public thoroughfares. KES also installed and operated free product skimming systems. The combined systems have recovered over 13,000 gallons of free product.
